How to get your first 100 subscribers as a new SEBI RA

A step-by-step plan for new SEBI Research Analysts to win their first 100 subscribers: website, research, email, webinars and sign-up, within ad rules.

Getting your first 100 subscribers as a new SEBI Research Analyst

Registration gives you permission to sell research. It does not give you anyone to sell it to. Most new RAs spend their first months waiting for clients who never hear about them. This guide is a practical plan for the first 100 paying subscribers, written for a one- or two-person practice with a small budget, and kept inside SEBI's advertising rules.

There are no shortcuts here and no promised conversion rates. What follows is the order in which to build things, and the mistakes that cost new RAs either clients or their registration.

First, the marketing rules that apply to you

Under para 11 of the SEBI master circular for RAs, the advertisement code covers "all forms of communications" that may influence an investor's decision. That explicitly includes email, messaging platforms and social media. If you use it to win clients, treat it as an advertisement. The rules that catch new RAs most often:

You cannotWhat to do instead
Promise or imply assured, minimum or target returns, or a “percentage accuracy”Explain your process, universe and holding period
Quote past performance or risk-return numbers unless verified by PaRRVAShare PaRRVA-verified metrics in the prescribed manner, or none
Use misleading or deceptive testimonialsAvoid client testimonials about returns entirely
Call yourself “Best”, “No. 1” or “Leading”State facts: registration number, experience, factual awards from independent bodies
Call something free unless it is free without conditionsLabel trials and samples exactly as they are
Run games, leagues or competitions with prizes or giftsRun education, not contests
Use the SEBI logoShow your registration number and the required disclaimers

Every advertisement must also carry your name as registered with SEBI, address, registration number and the standard warning, "Investment in securities market are subject to market risks. Read all the related documents carefully before investing." Where a message or social post has no room for these details, it must link to your website, and the website must carry them. The code also requires prior approval of advertisements from the SEBI-recognised supervisory body before issue, so allow lead time.

Two more rules shape your growth plan. First, you may not associate with people who give securities advice or make return claims without SEBI permission (para 21). Paying an unregistered finfluencer to promote you is out. Second, you must keep records of interactions with prospective clients, from the first conversation, for five years (para 1.13). Our social media guidelines post covers platform specifics.

Step 1: make yourself easy to verify

A prospect who finds you will check two things: are you registered, and do you look like a real business? Before you spend anything on reach, get these in place:

  • A website with your registered name, registration number, address, compliance officer and grievance contacts, the investor charter, monthly complaint data and your audit status. SEBI requires a functional website (Regulation 19A). Our free website health check flags missing items.
  • One clear page per service: what subscribers receive, how often, the holding period, the fee and the refund terms.
  • The same name, registration number and photo across LinkedIn, X, YouTube and your channel.

Step 2: offer one service, clearly labelled

New RAs often launch four plans at once. Start with one. If it is a model portfolio, the guidelines at Annexure A require it to be "true to label": named for its universe or theme, with a one-line objective, a stated investment horizon and a predefined review frequency. That discipline also makes it easier to market. "A large-cap portfolio reviewed monthly, for a three-year horizon" is a sentence a prospect can repeat to a friend. See how to build your first model portfolio.

Step 3: publish research in public

Your best marketing asset is evidence of how you think. Publish regularly where your audience already reads:

  • Sector notes and explainers of your method, written for investors rather than analysts.
  • Occasional sample reports, with every required disclosure.
  • When you name a security as an example in promotional material, add "The securities quoted are for illustration only and are not recommendatory."

Keep the tone factual. A post that explains why you avoid a sector during a capex cycle builds more trust than a post celebrating a winning call, and it does not breach the past-performance rule. For format and disclosures, see our research report writing guide.

Step 4: build an email list you own

Social platforms decide who sees your posts. An email list is yours. Practical points:

  • Offer something useful for the email address. A quarterly outlook note, a beginner's guide to reading an annual report, or a webinar registration. Every one of them is an advertisement if it promotes your service, so it carries the disclosures.
  • Use double opt-in and never buy lists. Bought lists damage deliverability and cannot be defended in an audit.
  • Write an onboarding sequence for new subscribers. Day 0: welcome and how to access the service. Day 1: your process. Day 3: the current portfolio or coverage list and its rationale. Day 5: how to read your updates. Day 7: how to raise a grievance and whom to contact.
  • Keep every email. Emails to clients and prospects are records you must retain for five years.

Step 5: run webinars

A webinar lets a prospect hear you think for an hour before paying. To run one well:

  • Opening and closing slides show your name, registration number and the standard warning. Disclose any holding in a security before you discuss it.
  • Keep Q&A general. Do not give a specific attendee a personal buy or sell call. Research for clients goes through your service, after KYC and agreement.
  • Pick topics that teach. How you screen a universe, how you size positions, how you think about the Budget or results season. Avoid sessions built around past winners.
  • Schedule outside market hours so working investors can attend.
  • Record it and keep the recording. It is a record of communication with prospects.
  • Follow up within a day with the recording, slides and one clear next step.

Step 6: use a free channel as the top of the funnel, carefully

A free Telegram or WhatsApp channel is where many RAs find their first subscribers. It is also where SEBI found the unregistered operators in its April 2026 order. A free channel works when it educates and links to your registered service. It fails when it posts unverified results and pushes people to pay through a creator-payment link. Read our guide to running a compliant paid Telegram channel before you start one.

Step 7: make joining simple and compliant

Many prospects drop off between "I'm interested" and "I've paid". A short, clean sign-up flow keeps them and keeps you compliant:

  1. KYC for the fee-paying client.
  2. The client reads and consents to your terms and MITC. SEBI does not allow any fee or service before consent (para 1.12).
  3. Payment through a banking channel, never cash.
  4. Immediate access and a welcome message.

Details are in how to collect subscription payments as an RA. Be careful with "limited period" pressure: SEBI's investor charter tells investors not to be attracted by limited-period discounts, gifts or incentives offered by an RA, so a countdown-timer offer works against the trust you are building.

Step 8: keep the first 100

Early subscribers become your referrals and your reputation. Deliver on the timelines you published. Answer grievances fast. Send every subscriber the same research at the same time, as the investor charter requires. Remind people before their plan expires rather than after. Our client communication guide covers the routine.

What to measure

You do not need industry benchmarks. You need your own numbers, tracked weekly: website visitors, email sign-ups, webinar attendees, KYC started, MITC signed, payments completed and renewals. The step with the biggest drop is the one to fix next.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a SEBI Research Analyst use client testimonials in marketing?

The advertisement code prohibits misleading or deceptive testimonials, and an RA may not refer to past performance or risk-return metrics unless they are verified by PaRRVA. In practice, testimonials about returns earned should be avoided entirely.

Can a new RA advertise accuracy or returns of past calls?

No. The advertisement code bars any implication of assured, minimum or target returns or percentage accuracy, and past performance can only be referred to using PaRRVA-verified metrics in the manner SEBI specifies.

Can I pay a finfluencer to promote my RA service?

Not if that person gives securities advice or makes return claims without SEBI permission. SEBI-regulated persons and their agents may not associate with such people, except through a SEBI-specified digital platform.

Do webinars and emails count as advertisements for an RA?

Yes, if they promote your services. The advertisement code covers email, messaging platforms, social media and audio-visual communication. They need the required disclosures, and recordings and emails must be kept as records for five years.

Can I offer a free trial as a new Research Analyst?

The advertisement code only allows something to be described as free if it actually is free without condition or obligation. If a trial has conditions, describe it accurately. Any client receiving research services still goes through your terms and conditions, and fee-paying clients through KYC.
