NSE Empanelled Algo Providers List (Oct 2026) and How to Get Empanelled

The NSE list of empanelled algo providers as of 16 October 2026, where NSE and BSE publish it, and the steps, rules and tech bar to get empanelled.

NSE Empanelled Algo Providers: The Current List and How to Get Empanelled

Since 1 April 2026, retail algo trading through a broker’s API in India runs only through algo providers empanelled with the stock exchanges. Most people searching this topic want one of two things: the list of providers NSE has empanelled, or the steps to become one. This guide covers both, using NSE’s own published list and circulars.

How to read it:

  • Provisional vs final. NSE grants provisional empanelment first and converts it to final later by a further circular. Quantiply’s two dates reflect that step.
  • White box vs black box. A provider marked “black box” may offer algos whose logic the user cannot see. Under SEBI’s rules, that provider must be registered as a Research Analyst.
  • The list changes. NSE adds providers through circulars every few weeks. Check the live page before relying on this table, and ask your broker which empanelled providers it has onboarded; a provider on the list still needs a broker tie-up to reach you.
  • Inclusion is not an endorsement. Empanelment is about the provider’s background, infrastructure and systems. It says nothing about the returns of any strategy.

Where to find the official lists

What empanelment means

The SEBI circular of 4 February 2025, “Safer participation of retail investors in Algorithmic trading”, made the broker the principal and the algo provider its agent for algo trading through APIs. Algo providers are not regulated by SEBI, but any provider placing algo orders with brokers through an API must be empanelled with the exchanges, which set the criteria. Brokers may deal only with empanelled providers and must do their own due diligence before onboarding one.

Empanelment does not replace a SEBI registration. It is about order-level accountability for algorithmic execution. If you give advice or research, you still need RA or RIA registration in your own name, and black-box algos need RA registration whatever else you hold.

White-box and black-box algos

  • White-box (execution) algos: logic is disclosed and replicable.
  • Black-box algos: logic is not known to the user and is not replicable. The provider must register as a Research Analyst, keep a detailed research report for each algo, confirm this to the exchanges, and register any change in logic as a fresh algo.

NSE’s FAQ also says an RA who wants to deploy a black-box algo must first become an empanelled algo provider, and that one provider cannot host black-box algos of several third-party RAs, because algos must be hosted on the broker’s server.

How to get empanelled with NSE

  1. Read the current criteria. NSE’s page points applicants to circular NSE/INVG/73992 dated 30 April 2026 “and updated from time to time”. Earlier criteria were in the detailed operational modalities (NSE/INVG/69255, 22 July 2025) and the corrigendum NSE/INVG/70309 (19 September 2025). Use the latest circular, not a summary.
  2. Prepare the entity and declarations. NSE evaluates providers on background, infrastructure and systems, among other parameters. The FAQ notes, for example, that the provider gives a self-declaration on its letterhead of any cyber or adverse technical incident in the previous three years.
  3. Get registered with SEBI if you will offer black-box logic. That means RA registration before you apply as a black-box provider. See what SEBI RA registration costs.
  4. Apply, then expect provisional empanelment. NSE announces provisional empanelment by circular and later converts it to final.
  5. Sign up with at least one broker. Only a broker can give API access. The broker does its own due diligence, signs an agreement with you, and applies to the exchange for permission for each algo; approved algos receive an exchange identifier that is attached to every order.
  6. Host on the broker’s servers. NSE’s modalities require strategies to run on the broker’s servers, with order messages originating there.

The technology bar

Most of the real work is technical, because brokers and exchanges enforce the framework in software:

  • No open APIs. Access only through a unique vendor-client API key and a static IP whitelisted by the broker.
  • OAuth-based authentication only, with two-factor authentication for API access.
  • Per-order algo tagging with the exchange-issued identifier, and exchange approval before changing an approved algo.
  • Risk controls. The exchange can use a kill switch on orders from a particular algo ID, and brokers run their own risk management on API orders. NSE’s FAQ notes algo orders of type “Market” are not permitted under its circular NSE/MSD/67753.
  • Mock sessions. Except for individual “tech-savvy” clients running their own algos, entities must take part in the exchanges’ mandatory mock trading sessions.

Cost and timeline

NSE does not publish a single all-in cost, and broker terms vary, so plan around categories rather than a number: entity and professional costs, SEBI registration if you need it, any exchange or broker onboarding charges in the current circular, and the technology build. The technology and the ongoing compliance (record-keeping, re-approval when logic changes, monitoring, mock sessions) usually outweigh one-time fees. SEBI does allow the provider and broker to share subscription charges and brokerage collected from the client, provided all charges are disclosed prominently to the client.

Build it yourself, or don’t be an algo provider at all?

Empanelment makes sense if algorithmic execution is your product and you have the engineering and compliance depth to run it. Many RAs and APs who look at this route realise their product is really research: a model portfolio the client reviews and places in their own broker account. That route does not need algo-provider empanelment; it needs RA or RIA registration and good operating software. Our guides on SEBI’s retail algo rules and selling trading strategies after April 2026 walk through the choice.

AlphaQuark is built for the research route: model portfolios with multi-broker rebalancing that clients approve, KYC and e-sign, billing, time-stamped advice records and PaRRVA submissions for enrolled advisers. See the RA software platform, AlphaQuark for sub-brokers and APs and our algo compliance overview. It is not a way around any registration or empanelment requirement.

Disclaimer: This article is for educational and informational purposes only. It is not investment, legal or compliance advice, and it does not describe any way to avoid a SEBI registration the law requires. SEBI and exchange rules on algorithmic trading are still being refined through circulars and FAQs. Always confirm the current position against the official SEBI, NSE and BSE circulars or with a qualified compliance professional before acting.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find the list of NSE empanelled algo providers?

NSE publishes it on its “Empanelled Algo Providers of the Exchange” page in the Members section, with a downloadable list. As of 16 October 2026 the list had 17 providers, some with provisional and some with final empanelment. Each empanelment is also announced by an NSE circular.

Does BSE publish a separate list?

BSE runs its own empanelment and announces it through member notices on bseindia.com. Search BSE notices for algo provider empanelment, or ask your broker which empanelled providers it has onboarded.

What is the difference between provisional and final empanelment?

NSE first grants provisional empanelment by circular and later converts it to final empanelment by a further circular. Both appear on NSE’s list with their status marked. Check the current circular for what a provisional provider may do.

Do I still need a SEBI registration if I am empanelled?

Empanelment is not a SEBI registration. If you offer black-box algos, SEBI requires you to register as a Research Analyst and keep a research report for each algo. If you give advice or research to clients, you need RA or RIA registration in your own name.

What are the technical requirements?

No open APIs; access only through a unique vendor-client API key and a broker-whitelisted static IP, OAuth-based authentication and two-factor authentication. Every algo order carries an exchange identifier, each algo needs exchange permission through the broker, and strategies run on the broker’s servers.

How much does algo provider empanelment cost?

There is no single published figure. Plan for entity and professional costs, SEBI RA registration if you offer black-box logic, any exchange or broker charges in the current NSE circular, and the technology build, which is usually the largest and most ongoing cost.

Is a provider on the NSE list endorsed by NSE?

No. Empanelment assesses the provider’s background, infrastructure and systems so brokers can onboard it. It is not an endorsement of any strategy or its returns.
