What Is PaRRVA? Full Form, Rules and What It Means for Research Analysts
PaRRVA stands for Past Risk and Return Verification Agency. It is the SEBI-recognised body that checks the past performance of investment advisers (IAs), research analysts (RAs) and algo providers before they are allowed to show that performance to clients. If you are a SEBI-registered RA and you want to tell anyone what your recommendations or model portfolio returned, PaRRVA now decides what you can say.
This guide explains what PaRRVA is, the dates and circulars behind it, what you can and cannot say about past performance today, and how to keep a track record that can actually be verified. If you are looking for how AlphaQuark helps RAs submit data to PaRRVA, see our PaRRVA performance verification page.
PaRRVA in one paragraph
PaRRVA (Past Risk and Return Verification Agency) verifies the risk and return figures of SEBI-regulated advisers, research analysts and algo providers. CARE Ratings Limited is the recognised agency and NSE acts as the PaRRVA Data Centre. A pilot ran from 8 December 2025 and full operation began on 4 May 2026. RAs and IAs who want to communicate certified past performance had to enrol by 3 September 2026 (extended from 3 August 2026).
PaRRVA full form and who runs it
- Full form: Past Risk and Return Verification Agency.
- The agency: CARE Ratings Limited is the recognised PaRRVA.
- The data centre: NSE acts as the PaRRVA Data Centre. It receives and processes the recommendation and return data that is then verified.
- Who it covers: investment advisers, research analysts and algo providers who want to communicate past performance.
Why SEBI created it
The advertisement code for IAs and RAs has long barred references to past performance. At the same time, anyone outside the regulated system could post any return claim on social media. Clients had no neutral way to tell a real record from a made-up one. PaRRVA fixes this from the regulated side: registered advisers can show performance again, but only figures that an independent agency has checked. SEBI set out the framework for creating and running PaRRVA in a circular dated 4 April 2025.
PaRRVA timeline: the circulars that matter
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 4 April 2025 | SEBI circular sets out the framework for creating and operating PaRRVA. |
| 30 October 2025 | Interim arrangement (circular HO/38/12/11(1)2025-MIRSD-POD/I/73/2025): IAs and RAs may share CA/CMA-certified past performance, on request and one-to-one only. |
| 8 December 2025 | PaRRVA pilot begins. |
| 29 April 2026 | SEBI circular fixes the enrolment date as 3 August 2026, given operation from 4 May 2026. |
| 4 May 2026 | PaRRVA begins full operation. |
| 3 August 2026 | SEBI circular HO/38/14/(11)2026-MIRSD-POD1/I/18038/2026 extends the enrolment deadline. |
| 3 September 2026 | Revised last date for IAs and RAs who want to communicate certified past performance to enrol with PaRRVA. |
| 4 May 2028 | Two years after operationalisation. From here, only PaRRVA-verified risk and return metrics may be communicated. Pre-PaRRVA certified data can no longer be used. |
The 4 May 2028 date is derived from the October 2025 circular, which says the two-year window runs from the date PaRRVA became operational. SEBI can change any of these dates, so check the latest circular on sebi.gov.in before relying on them.
What you can and cannot say about past performance now
The rules split your history into two periods: before PaRRVA went live on 4 May 2026, and after.
Performance before 4 May 2026 (the interim route)
Under the 30 October 2025 circular, an RA may share past performance from before PaRRVA's start, but only within tight limits:
- It must be certified by a member of ICAI or ICMAI (a chartered accountant or cost accountant).
- It can be shared only when a client or prospective client specifically asks for it.
- It must be shared one-to-one. It cannot go on your website, social media or any public channel.
- It must carry SEBI's prescribed disclaimer, which says the data is not verified by PaRRVA, may not be comparable with other advisers' data, and that past performance is no guarantee of future results.
- You must have enrolled with PaRRVA within the deadline. If you did not, you cannot use this route at all.
- It expires two years after PaRRVA's start. After that, older pre-PaRRVA data cannot be used in any client communication.
Performance after 4 May 2026
For any period after PaRRVA became operational, performance can be advertised or shared with clients only using risk and return metrics verified by PaRRVA. A return figure you calculate yourself, a broker P&L screenshot or a spreadsheet does not qualify. The circular also notes that making return or performance claims without SEBI permission can lead to summary proceedings under the SEBI (Intermediaries) Regulations.
If you missed the enrolment deadline
Missing the enrolment date does not cancel your RA registration. You can still publish research and run your practice. What you lose is the right to communicate certified past performance, which for most RAs is the most persuasive part of their marketing. If you did not enrol by 3 September 2026, check the current position with PaRRVA and RAASB, and keep every public channel free of return claims until you have a verified figure.
How to build a PaRRVA-ready track record
PaRRVA verifies prospectively, from the time you are on-boarded. That makes the quality of your day-to-day records the thing that matters most. Five practices make verification straightforward.
1. Record every recommendation when you make it
Log the instrument, action, price, date and time, weight and rationale at the moment you publish. History rebuilt later from memory, screenshots or an edited spreadsheet cannot be verified. If each model-portfolio rebalance is stored as a dated advice record when it happens, there is nothing to reconstruct.
2. Keep advice in a system, not only in chat
Tips typed straight into Telegram or WhatsApp leave a weak trail. Publish from a platform that stores each call as a structured record, and use chat apps only to deliver it.
3. Report net, against the right benchmark, for a stated period
- Net of costs: brokerage, slippage and taxes change the picture. Gross-only figures do not hold up.
- Honest benchmark: compare a large-cap model with the NIFTY 50 and a broad multi-cap model with the NIFTY 500, not with whichever index flatters you. Our model portfolio performance metrics guide covers benchmark choice in detail.
- Period stated: a return without a clear start and end date is marketing, not reporting.
4. Show risk, not only return
PaRRVA verifies risk as well as return, so track the path, not just the end point:
- Maximum drawdown: the worst peak-to-trough fall a client would have lived through.
- Volatility: how uneven the ride was.
- Benchmark-relative measures: alpha and tracking error, so any outperformance has context.
Showing drawdown openly feels uncomfortable, but it tells clients you are an analyst, not a promoter.
5. Make verification a non-event
The goal is that recommendation history, rebalances and returns already sit in one consistent, time-stamped place, so a submission is clean on the first attempt. It also helps to turn the same data into a regular client report: net return, benchmark, drawdown, what changed and why.
Audit your public material
Go through your website, ads, Telegram and WhatsApp channels, YouTube descriptions and social bios. Remove or rewrite anything that states "returns", "accuracy", "hit rate" or "success rate" unless it maps to a PaRRVA-verified figure. Our guide to social media guidelines for SEBI-registered advisers covers the wider advertisement rules, and the SEBI RA compliance calendar lists the other recurring deadlines.
How AlphaQuark handles PaRRVA
On AlphaQuark, each recommendation you publish (model-portfolio rebalances, single-stock and intraday calls, derivatives and multi-leg strategies) is stored as a time-stamped advice record. For RAs who have set up their PaRRVA enrolment on the platform, these records are submitted to the PaRRVA data centre automatically, and any submission that fails is flagged in your admin dashboard so it can be fixed. You do not have to assemble files at the end of the month. Details are on our PaRRVA verification page.
Keep a PaRRVA-ready track record without the paperwork
AlphaQuark records every recommendation as a time-stamped advice record and submits it for PaRRVA verification, alongside model portfolios, one-click rebalancing across client brokers, KYC, MITC and payments.
